The Sidhil Innov8 iQ is a four section electric profiling ward bed built for acute wards, specialist areas and high dependency use in coronary and high dependency units. It is made in Halifax by the only remaining volume manufacturer of hospital beds in the United Kingdom, which matters on a used bed because spares and service support remain available rather than becoming an obsolete part hunt. The mattress platform runs from 340 mm to 750 mm, so a patient can step off at a low height and a clinician can work at their own. Safe working load is 255 kg with a maximum patient weight of 190 kg. Supplied here with a dynamic alternating pressure mattress and its pump.

Side rails, mattress fit and entrapment risk

Side rails only reduce risk when rail, frame and mattress are dimensionally compatible, and the Innov8 iQ has two rail types with different mattress limits. The standard three bar cantilever rail takes a mattress up to 152 mm thick. The high four bar cantilever rail takes up to 279 mm. Fitting a mattress deeper than the rail allows reduces the effective rail height and opens gaps a patient can become trapped in, and an overlay used on top of a foam mattress usually means a thinner foam mattress is needed to keep within the limit. Check the effective rail height above the compressed mattress surface and check every gap against current national guidance on the safe use of bed rails, and reassess whenever the surface changes. The manufacturer states that only Innov8 iQ side rails should be used with this bed, and that these rails are not intended for use with children.

What the iQ adds over a standard ward bed

iQ Contour. When the backrest flattens, the leg section lowers in small steps rather than all at once. That keeps the patient in position on the mattress instead of letting them slide down the bed, which is what generates shear at the sacrum and drives pressure damage. It is the single most useful thing on the bed and it happens without anyone pressing anything extra.

Auto regressing backrest. The deck moves as the backrest rises rather than dragging the patient up the bed, reducing shear and abdominal compression.

Cardiac chair. Pressing auto contour and tilt within five seconds of each other profiles the bed into a seated position with foot down tilt, so a patient can sit properly without leaving the bed.

Two handsets with lockout. The carer handset controls everything and can lower the platform to 340 mm. The patient handset is deliberately limited to 420 mm and above, so an unsupervised patient cannot put the bed into the low zone, and any function locked out on the carer handset is locked out on theirs.

Electrical CPR. One button levels, flattens and lowers the platform, then drives it to maximum height for chest compressions, overriding any locked out functions. Manual CPR handles on both sides drop the backrest faster still.

Configuration and mattress details

The Innov8 iQ was supplied with a choice of standard or high cantilever side rails, and the rail fitted determines the maximum mattress thickness. The rail type on this unit, and the model of the dynamic mattress and pump supplied with it, are not stated here pending confirmation against the item, and should not be assumed from the description above. Ask before ordering if either is needed, particularly where a specific mattress depth or pump specification is required.

Hoist clearance

Under bed clearance is 150 mm with the platform at 420 mm and 80 mm at the minimum height of 340 mm. Where a mobile hoist is used with the bed, the manufacturer warns that hoist legs higher than 75 mm risk collision when the bed is operated in the low zone. Check the hoist leg height against the clearance before the bed enters service in a room where hoisting takes place.

Condition and history. A pre-owned unit from clinical service, cleaned and inspected, confirmed to power up. Cosmetic marking consistent with previous use should be expected. Ongoing maintenance should follow the operating organisation's planned maintenance schedule and the duties under PUWER 1998. Delivery and access

This bed measures 2280 mm long and 1030 mm wide and weighs approximately 130 kg complete. Measure every access point on the route before ordering, including external doors, internal doorways, corridor turns, stair widths and lift dimensions.

Delivery is to ground floor only and the bed is supplied fully assembled. It cannot be carried upstairs or dismantled for delivery.
