Dentra Extraction Forceps Fig 67, Upper Third Molars and Wisdom Teeth, English Pattern
£9.99
This item
Dentra Fig 67 is an English pattern extraction forceps for upper third molars and upper wisdom teeth, usable on either side. The pattern exists because the upper wisdom tooth is the hardest routine extraction in the mouth: it sits at the very back of the arch, it is often bulbous, and access is limited by the coronoid process and the patient's own cheek. Fig 67 answers all three. A double bend in the working end carries the beaks past the anterior teeth and the cheek so the operator's hand is not fighting for space, and the beaks are separated widely enough to seat around a bulbous crown rather than skidding off it. In the English pattern the fulcrum sits closer to the working end than in the American pattern, which converts less hand force into more grip at the tooth.

Fig 67 is the upper wisdom pattern in the English range. It is used on erupted upper third molars on either side, which means one instrument rather than a left and a right, and it is the forceps most practices reach for when the tooth is accessible but sits too far back for a general upper molar pattern to seat cleanly.
The design detail that matters is the double bend. Straight-shanked forceps put the operator's hand directly in the line of sight and against the lower lip when working at the back of the upper arch. The bend moves the handles down and away, which restores visibility and lets the wrist stay in a neutral position through the movement. Cross serrations on the beak faces hold the grip once seated, which is what allows controlled expansion of the socket rather than a slipping, repeated grab at the crown.

| Stage | Action |
|---|---|
| Before first use | Remove all packaging, decontaminate and sterilise |
| Point of use | Keep the instrument moist after use so blood and debris do not dry into the serrations and the joint |
| Cleaning | Process per the practice decontamination policy, with the joint opened fully so the hinge is reached |
| Inspection | Check beak alignment, serration condition, tip integrity and joint movement |
| Lubrication | Apply instrument lubricant to the joint where the local policy requires it |
| Sterilisation | Steam sterilise per the validated cycle for the load, with the instrument in the open position |
| Storage | Store dry and protected, avoiding contact that could chip a beak tip |
| Withdrawal | Remove from service on any sign of corrosion, cracking, beak misalignment or a slack joint |
The above is general guidance. The practice decontamination policy and current national guidance on decontamination in primary care dental practices take precedence.
Dentra is the dental instrument range from Elarix Medical. Extraction forceps are supplied by figure number across the English and American patterns, alongside orthodontic pliers and cutters and prosthodontic measuring instruments. Every item is individually referenced and barcoded, so a repeat order is placed against a code rather than a description.
