Akron 2-Section Electric Patient Couch
£399.99
An electric examination couch built by Hoskins Medical Equipment Limited, supplied with its hand controller for powered height adjustment. The couch raises and lowers under power rather than on a foot pump or a fixed frame, which is the feature that decides how a couch works day to day.
Height is the whole argument for a powered couch, and it works in two directions. Downwards, a couch that drops low enough can be transferred onto by a patient who cannot climb a step, which is the difference between examining somebody properly and examining them in a chair. Upwards, it brings the patient to the clinician rather than asking the clinician to stoop over a fixed platform, which over a full list is the part that saves backs. A hydraulic couch does the same job but needs a foot pumped a dozen times between patients. On this couch it is a button, and the height can be changed mid examination with one hand while the other stays on the patient.
The couch is operated from a hand controller rather than a foot bar, so the height is adjusted from wherever the clinician is standing. Being powered, it is work equipment with a motor, a controller and a mains lead, so it sits under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 for maintenance and is electrically safety tested before dispatch, which a fixed height couch never needs.
For planning purposes, an electric examination couch of this class in the United Kingdom runs around 1900 to 2000 mm long and 630 to 700 mm wide, drops to somewhere between 450 and 500 mm at its lowest, rises to between 950 and 1060 mm at its highest, and carries a safe working load in the order of 200 to 250 kg. Those are the figures the market is built around and they give a usable idea of the space a couch of this type needs.
They are not, however, this couch's figures. Hoskins Medical Equipment published no specification sheet that remains available, so rather than borrow numbers from a similar model, Elarix Medical measures this couch: overall length and width, minimum and maximum height to the top of the cushion, backrest travel and base footprint, with the safe working load read from the manufacturer's label. All of it is stated in writing before dispatch, which is more use to a buyer planning a room than a figure lifted from a catalogue that does not describe the couch being bought.
