Dentra Caliper Gauge, Double Scale, Sliding Vernier
Dentra Dental Caliper Gauge, Double Scale, Sliding Vernier
The Dentra caliper gauge is a sliding measuring instrument for dental use, with a graduated scale and a movable jaw. Instruments of this type are commonly known in dentistry as Boley gauges, and they answer a problem that runs through restorative, prosthodontic and orthodontic work alike: a great deal of clinical judgement depends on dimensions that cannot be estimated reliably by eye. Tooth width, crown height, the space left by an extracted tooth, the thickness of a restoration, the gap available for a pontic. The caliper turns each of those into a number in millimetres that can be written down, communicated to the laboratory and checked again at the next visit.

Before use
- This instrument is supplied non-sterile. It must be decontaminated and sterilised in line with the receiving practice's decontamination policy before any clinical use, including before first use.
- For use by a suitably qualified dental professional.
- Check the zero position before measuring. Close the jaws fully and confirm the scale reads zero, since a caliper that has drifted gives a consistent and therefore invisible error.
- Read the scale square on to avoid parallax error, and apply only light contact pressure when measuring soft tissue or wax.
- Inspect the jaws, the slide and the scale legibility before each use. A bent jaw or a worn slide makes the reading unreliable.
What the caliper is used for
The instrument measures length, width and thickness in millimetre increments, and it is used both chairside and in the laboratory. In restorative work it gives tooth dimensions and the space available for a restoration. In prosthodontics it sizes teeth for a denture and measures the edentulous span. In orthodontics it measures tooth width for space analysis and crowding assessment, which is arithmetic that only works if the individual measurements are accurate.
Flat measuring ends suit intraoral work: a flat face sits against a tooth surface or spans a gap without digging into soft tissue, and the same face reads a model or a casting on the bench. Because the same instrument is used in the mouth and on the model, the number recorded in the notes is directly comparable with the number the laboratory works to, which is the point of measuring at all.
The double scale allows the instrument to be read in more than one way without a second gauge. Confirm the scale arrangement on this reference against the requirement before ordering, since gauges of this type are produced in several configurations.

Specification limited to what is confirmed
The measuring range, graduation interval, overall length, jaw form, scale arrangement and the exact steel grade are not stated here pending confirmation against the production record and material certificate, and should not be assumed from the description above. Dental calipers are produced in several ranges and configurations, so these details should be confirmed where a particular specification is required. Ask before ordering.
Reprocessing and care
| Stage | Action |
|---|---|
| Before first use | Remove all packaging, decontaminate and sterilise |
| Point of use | Rinse promptly so debris does not dry into the slide and the scale engraving |
| Cleaning | Process per the practice decontamination policy, moving the jaw through its full travel so the slide is reached |
| Zero check | Close the jaws fully and confirm the scale reads zero |
| Inspection | Check scale legibility, jaw straightness and that the slide moves smoothly without play |
| Sterilisation | Steam sterilise per the validated cycle for the load |
| Storage | Store dry and protected, keeping the jaws clear of contact with heavier instruments |
| Withdrawal | Remove from service on corrosion, an illegible scale, a bent jaw, a sticking slide or a zero error that cannot be corrected |
The above is general guidance. The practice decontamination policy and current national guidance on decontamination in primary care dental practices take precedence.
Dentra range
Dentra is the dental instrument range from Elarix Medical. Measuring instruments are supplied alongside extraction forceps by figure number across adult and children's patterns, and orthodontic pliers and cutters. Every item is individually referenced and barcoded, so a repeat order is placed against a code rather than a description.
