The Umano Medical FL36 is a Canadian built electric care bed for medical, surgical and long term care settings. Powered actuators adjust height and the surface contours, including backrest and knee gatch, from control boards on the bed, and the four section platform sits on a steel frame with an epoxy finish for cleaning.

This unit is pre-owned, carries a manufacture date of September 2017, and is supplied with a mattress. It is a heavy powered item, so the delivery and access notes below are part of the description rather than an afterthought.

Checked before dispatch

These are in-house workshop checks. Damaged or non-working items are not dispatched. No engineer service, load test or electrical safety certificate is included, and this item may require service. Ongoing maintenance sits under PUWER 1998, together with periodic electrical safety testing, and remains with the organisation operating the equipment.

Confirm before a patient uses the bed

  • Read the safe working load from the bed's own label and work to that figure. It covers the patient, the mattress and anything mounted on the bed together.
  • Electrical safety testing is carried out on receipt, as for any pre-owned mains powered device.
  • Check the mattress fits the platform with no gap at the sides or ends, and that any siderails fitted are compatible with that mattress depth. Gaps between mattress, rail and frame are the entrapment risk on any profiling bed.
  • Confirm all brakes hold on the floor surface where the bed will stand before it is loaded.

What an electric profiling bed actually changes

Two things separate a bed like this from a fixed frame. The first is height. Bringing the platform down to its lowest setting reduces the distance a confused or unsteady patient falls if they get out unaided, and raising it to working height means care is delivered without staff bending over a low frame all day. Those two positions serve opposite people, the patient and the carer, and only a powered height bed gives both without a compromise setting in the middle.

The second is the four section platform. Raising the backrest alone slides a patient down the bed and shears the skin over the sacrum, which is how pressure damage starts in someone who cannot reposition themselves. Bringing the knee gatch up first holds the pelvis, so the backrest can then be raised for feeding, treatment or conversation without the patient migrating. That sequence is why the sections are separate, and it is the difference between a bed that supports pressure care and one that quietly works against it.

Two limitations are worth stating. The bed weighs well over 100 kg before anyone is in it, so it moves on its castors within a building but is not something one person handles up a stair, and the access notes below matter. And the platform is designed to be used with siderails and a mattress matched to it: a mattress that is too thin, too small or too soft at the edges undermines both the profiling and the entrapment protection, so a fresh mattress is specified to the platform rather than bought on size alone.

Delivery, access and lifting

  • The bed weighs between 137 kg and 199 kg depending on configuration. It is not a two person carry, and it is not carried up or down stairs.
  • Delivery is kerbside or to ground floor access unless other arrangements are agreed beforehand. Confirm doorway widths, corridor turns and lift dimensions in advance.
