Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR Plus AED with Carry Case, Pre-Owned, Training and Familiarisation Use
The LIFEPAK CR Plus is a public access defibrillator built around two-step operation: the lid release switches the device on, and spoken prompts guide the rescuer from there. It uses the ADAPTIV biphasic truncated exponential waveform with escalating energy, and it was for many years one of the most widely deployed AEDs in UK workplaces, schools and public buildings.
This unit is pre-owned and is offered for training, familiarisation, drills, display and spares, or to an organisation that already holds in-date consumables for a CR Plus. It is not supplied in a rescue-ready state, and for the reason set out below it cannot be returned to one.
This device cannot be made rescue ready
- The CR Plus runs on one battery and pad system, the CHARGE-PAK charger paired with QUIK-PAK electrodes, sold as a single dated kit. The manufacturer ended supply of both in February 2026.
- No other battery or pad set fits this device. Once the fitted kit reaches its date or is used, the AED cannot be brought back to a ready state by any means.
- It is therefore not sold for mounting in a workplace, school, public building or vehicle as an emergency defibrillator, and is not a substitute for a currently supported AED.
- Any pads supplied with this unit are for training and familiarisation only. They are marked as such and are not placed on a person.
- Anyone needing a defibrillator for actual emergency cover requires a current model with available consumables.

Checked before dispatch

- Self-test observed and the readiness and service indicators noted.
- Voice prompts heard through the speaker.
- Casing, handle, lid, electrode connector and carry case inspected for damage.
- Exterior cleaned.
These are in-house workshop checks. Damaged or non-working items are not dispatched. Shock delivery has not been verified against a defibrillator analyser, and no service, calibration or output test is included. The device is sold on the training and familiarisation basis set out above.
What this unit is genuinely useful for
The value in a CR Plus at this point is in everything except the shock. The device switches on the moment the lid opens, talks a rescuer through pad placement, analyses the rhythm and states plainly whether a shock is advised, and prompts CPR in timed cycles. That sequence is the thing most people fail at under pressure, and rehearsing it on the same casework, the same lid catch and the same voice prompts as the unit somebody may one day meet on a wall is worth more than rehearsing on a plastic dummy trainer. For first aid instructors, workplace responders, ambulance service familiarisation, film and display work, or a teaching collection, that is a real use.
The reason it cannot be more than that comes down to how the consumables were designed. On this platform the battery charger and the electrode pads are a matched pair, sold as one kit with one shared expiry date, and the internal battery is trickle charged by the CHARGE-PAK rather than swapped out directly. There is no universal pad or battery that fits in their place. When the manufacturer stopped supplying that kit, every CR Plus in service acquired a fixed end date, the date printed on the kit inside it. That is not a fault in the individual device, which may well be in good order, and it is not something a service or repair can address.
Two situations make this a poor purchase. If the requirement is emergency cover, whether for a workplace, a sports club, a school or a community cabinet, this is the wrong device regardless of price and regardless of how well it tests today, because it has an end point and no path past it. And if the intention is to keep it as a spare for an existing CR Plus fleet, the same reasoning applies to that fleet: the spare will expire on the same terms as the units it is meant to back up. Where a rescue-ready device is required, a current AED with available consumables is the only sound answer.
