Philips HeartStart XL+ Defibrillator and Monitor, Model 861290, Pre-Owned with a Brand New Battery

The Philips HeartStart XL+ is a defibrillator and monitor built to carry a resuscitation from first responder through to advanced life support on one device. It offers four clinical modes: Monitor, Manual Defibrillation, AED and Pacer. A basic life support responder can work in AED mode under voice and text prompts, and the same unit switches to manual defibrillation and pacing when the ALS team arrives, which removes the handover to a second machine at the worst possible moment. Defibrillation uses Philips SMART Biphasic, a low energy biphasic truncated exponential waveform with impedance compensation. Supplied here with a brand new battery.

Mandatory before any use on a person

  • Fresh, in-date multifunction electrode pads are mandatory. No pads are supplied with this unit, and pads are the delivery path for defibrillation, pacing and pads ECG.
  • Check the Ready For Use indicator and run the device's operational test with the supplied test load before the unit is placed on a resuscitation trolley or in a vehicle.
  • The device must be used only by clinicians trained on this model. Manual defibrillation, synchronised cardioversion and pacing are advanced interventions.
  • Confirm the software version and configuration meet the receiving organisation's resuscitation policy, and record the unit on the medical device inventory before it enters service.

Checked before dispatch

  • Cleaned and inspected.
  • Powered up and function tested, including display, controls, audible prompts and charge cycle.
  • New battery fitted and charging confirmed on AC power.
  • ECG cable, power cable and test load checked for damage and secure connection.

These are in-house workshop checks. Damaged or non-working items are not dispatched. This item may require service and calibration. A full engineer service, output energy verification and certification are not included unless this listing states that the unit has been serviced. Ongoing planned maintenance and periodic electrical safety testing remain with the operating organisation.

Key features

Four clinical modes, Monitor, Manual Defibrillation, AED and Pacer, so one device covers basic and advanced life support without a mid-resuscitation change of machine.
SMART Biphasic waveform, a low energy biphasic truncated exponential with waveform parameters adjusted to patient impedance.
AED mode with voice and text prompts, guiding a basic life support responder through analysis and shock delivery.
Manual defibrillation in three steps, with energy selected by the clinician and synchronised cardioversion available.
Non-invasive transcutaneous pacing through multifunction electrode pads, in Demand or Fixed modes, where the pacing option is fitted.
Monitoring of up to three ECG waveforms at a time, acquired through a 3 or 5 lead ECG set or through the pads.
Ready For Use indicator giving a constant status update, which is what makes a defibrillator trustworthy sitting unattended on a trolley.
Automated self tests run on a schedule, with critical event and trend data stored in internal memory.
USB data export for review in Philips HeartStart Event Review Pro, supporting resuscitation audit and debrief.
Rechargeable lithium-ion battery with AC as a secondary source, charging continuously while plugged in, so the unit is ready whether docked or carried.
Brand new battery fitted, which on a used defibrillator is the single component that most often makes the difference between a working unit and a shelf ornament.

Fitted options

Pacing, SpO2, EtCO2 and non-invasive blood pressure were optional on the HeartStart XL+ and were not fitted to every unit. Where a particular capability is essential, ask before ordering and the configuration will be confirmed from the device information screen. The unit is offered on the basis of the specification and photographs shown.

Condition and history. A pre-owned unit in good condition, cleaned and inspected, supplied with a new battery. Cosmetic marking consistent with previous clinical use should be expected. Ongoing maintenance should follow the operating organisation's medical device management policy and the duties under PUWER 1998. The photographs form part of the description and show the actual condition of the items offered.

Routine care guidance

Component Action Interval
Ready For Use indicator Check the indicator and investigate any change in status Daily
Pads Confirm sealed pads are in date and a spare set is held Weekly
Operational test Run the shock delivery test with the test load per local policy Per local schedule
Battery Keep on AC between uses, note any fall in run time After each use
Cables and connectors Inspect the ECG cable, mains lead and pads connector for damage Weekly
Printer Check paper stock and print quality where the recorder is used Weekly
Housing and display Wipe down per local policy, inspect for cracks and fluid ingress Weekly
Service and output verification Engineer service and delivered energy check Per local schedule

The above is general guidance. The manufacturer instructions for use and the operating organisation's resuscitation and medical device policies take precedence. Any unit that fails a self test or an operational check should be taken out of service immediately and replaced on the trolley by a working device.
