An electric profiling hospital bed built by the Nesbit Evans Products Division of Huntleigh Healthcare Ltd, Woden Road West, Wednesbury, supplied complete with a hospital mattress, its handset controller, its integral folding side rails and its wooden head and foot boards. The mattress is selected at the point of order as either foam or an alternating air system. Huntleigh's own service documentation abbreviates the division to HNE, and beds carrying the Nesbit Evans badge sit at the start of the lineage that became the ArjoHuntleigh Contoura range. More than one of these beds is available, and quantity is confirmed at the point of order.
The deck profiles under power and the whole bed rises and falls on its mechanism, and those are two separate jobs. Profiling raises the backrest and breaks the knee so a patient can be sat up for feeding, for respiratory comfort or to move weight off the sacrum, and so the sitting position is reached without being dragged up the mattress. The height function is the manual handling control: it brings the working height to the carer rather than asking the carer to stoop. Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 that is the part of a powered bed which reduces back injury among the people doing the work, and it is why a powered bed replaces a wind-up frame wherever there is daily care.
What makes these particular beds worth buying is that they are complete. A bed that comes out of a decommissioning usually arrives as a frame: no mattress, no rails, no bed ends, no handset, and a parts hunt before anyone can be nursed in it. These are supplied with a hospital mattress, the handset, the wooden head and foot boards, and folding side rails on both sides that are integral to the bed rather than bolted on afterwards. That distinction matters beyond convenience. Integral rails were designed, dimensioned and tested as part of this bed, whereas third party rails added to a frame are the arrangement most often found to create gaps that should not be there.
Side rails and the mattress work as a matched set, and the rules are dimensional rather than a matter of preference. BS EN 60601-2-52:2010 plus A1:2015 is the designated standard for adult medical beds in the United Kingdom and MHRA guidance on bed rails applies the same figures: the top of the rail at least 220 mm above the uncompressed mattress along at least half the platform length, gaps between rail bars and between rail and platform held below 60 mm and 120 mm according to the zone, and the gap from headboard or footboard to the rail end either under 60 mm or over 318 mm so that a neck or a chest cannot be trapped. A deeper mattress, an overlay or an active surface raises the sleeping surface and lowers the effective rail height, which is how a combination that measured correctly on paper ends up out of specification in the bay. That is the reason the mattress is chosen here against the bed rather than bought separately on size: where the alternating air system is selected, the rail height is assessed on the surface fully inflated at its firmest setting, which is the worst case rather than the resting case.
