The Labcold RLVF0417 is a 124 litre under-bench laboratory freezer built with a Sparkfree interior, which means the sources of potential ignition have been taken out of the chamber. There is no internal light and no internal fan, and the electrical components that would normally sit inside the cabinet are relocated outside it. That is what separates a Sparkfree unit from a domestic freezer pressed into laboratory service, where the door switch and the light are inside the box with the contents.

It holds minus 18 to minus 25 degrees Celsius with a factory set point of minus 20 degrees Celsius, which is the band for routine sample, reagent and specimen storage. Temperature is shown on an external digital display, so the cabinet is read without opening the door, and there are high and low temperature alarms with both audible and visual indication plus a door open alarm. A 12 mm access port in the cabinet takes an external probe, which is how a unit of this sort is tied into a monitoring or data logging system where a stored record of temperature is a requirement.

The cabinet is 600 mm wide and 600 mm deep at 835 mm high, so it slots under a standard laboratory bench run, and it takes three shelves. The door is solid, self closing and key locked with two keys supplied, which covers the basic access control expected where samples or controlled reagents are held. Defrost is manual rather than automatic, which is deliberate on a laboratory freezer: an automatic defrost cycle lifts the chamber temperature periodically and that is not acceptable for samples that must stay below a stated limit.

Running cost is modest at around 0.8 kWh per 24 hours, and the ambient range is 16 to 32 degrees Celsius, so a warm plant room or a conservatory corridor is outside the design envelope and a unit sited there will struggle to hold set point. Siting and ventilation matter on under-bench units, since the condenser has to shed heat into the space around it.

Points to note before ordering

Sparkfree is not explosion proof. Labcold state the unit is not suitable for storing open containers of volatile substances. It is a cabinet with the ignition sources taken out of the chamber, not an ATEX certified or flameproof freezer. Where flammable substances are held, the assessment under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 governs what may be stored and where.
Manual defrost. Defrosting is a planned task, and contents are to be moved to alternative storage while it is carried out.
Ambient range. Designed for 16 to 32 degrees Celsius ambient, with clearance around the cabinet for the condenser to shed heat.
Monitoring. The onboard display and alarms are local only. A logger or a connected monitoring system is needed where a stored temperature record is required, and is not part of this sale.
Pre-owned condition. Marks to the casing consistent with service use. Elarix Medical will run the cabinet down to set point and photograph the actual unit on request.
