The JXB-178 is Guangzhou Berrcom's non contact infrared thermometer, reading a forehead in about one second from a distance of 3 to 5 cm. It runs three modes, body, surface and room, holds the last 32 readings in memory, and signals the result on a backlit display that changes colour as the figure rises. It is the instrument for screening a queue of people quickly without touching any of them.
Understanding what a non contact thermometer measures is what separates a sensible purchase from a disappointed one. The sensor reads infrared radiation emitted by the skin of the forehead and converts that surface figure into a body equivalent reading. It is not measuring core temperature, and no non contact device does. That makes it a screening instrument: the question it answers well is whether a person needs a closer look, not what that person's temperature precisely is. Used that way, at a door, a reception desk, a care home round or a school office, it does a job no contact thermometer can match, because it reads in a second, needs no probe covers and never touches anyone.
Technique governs the result more than the specification does. The instructions for use call for a distance of 3 to 5 cm, a forehead that is clean and dry, and a subject out of draughts and direct heat, with the device and the person settled at the same room conditions before reading. Sweat, a fringe, a cold walk in from outside or a scan taken at arm's length all pull the figure down, which is the usual explanation for a reading that looks implausibly low. Within its stated bands the device is quoted at plus or minus 0.2 degrees Celsius between 35.0 and 42.0 degrees Celsius, widening to plus or minus 0.3 degrees Celsius at the extremes of its range, with a resolution of 0.1 degrees Celsius.
The colour coded backlight is what makes it usable at volume: green up to 37.3 degrees Celsius, orange from 37.4 to 37.9, and red at 38.0 and above, so a result is read at a glance without interpreting a number. The surface mode covers 0 to 60 degrees Celsius for a feed bottle, bath water or a food surface, and the room mode reads ambient from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. It runs from two AA cells, weighs 105 g without them, and switches itself off in under thirty seconds. Supplied new.
