Joerns Oxford Switch Active Stand Aid, 180 kg Safe Working Load, Pre-Owned

The Oxford Switch is a manual active stand aid for sit-to-stand transfers and short repositioning moves with people who retain some weight-bearing ability. Because it is non-powered there is no battery to charge, no charger to lose and no actuator to service, which is what makes it practical in a home or a busy care setting where a powered stand aid spends half its life on charge. The quick-split feature separates the unit into a 5.5 kg frame and a 10.5 kg base, so it goes into a car boot and up a domestic staircase in two manageable lifts. Safe working load is 180 kg, overall width 550 mm and turning radius 760 mm, which keeps it usable in a small bathroom or a ward bay.

Suitable only for people with weight-bearing ability

  • The Switch is an active stand aid. The person being transferred must be able to bear weight through their legs and take an active part in standing. It is not suitable for anyone who is fully non-weight-bearing, and a passive hoist with a sling is the correct equipment in that case.
  • Suitability should be established by a moving and handling assessment for the individual, not assumed from the safe working load alone.
  • Set the knee pad to the individual before every transfer and confirm the feet are correctly placed on the footplate.
  • The 180 kg safe working load covers the person together with anything carried during the transfer. Where components are combined, the lowest rating in the complete system governs.
  • This is lifting equipment for lifting persons. In Great Britain it requires a thorough examination by a competent person at least every six months under LOLER 1998, with a current report held before the equipment is used.

Checked before dispatch

  • Cleaned and inspected.
  • Frame and base checked for damage, distortion and secure connection at the quick-split joint.
  • Knee pad adjustment, handles, footplate and castors checked for free movement and secure fixing.
  • Brakes checked.

These are in-house workshop checks. Damaged or non-working items are not dispatched. A full engineer service, load test and thorough examination are not included unless this listing states that the unit has been serviced. Ongoing inspection and six monthly thorough examination remain with the operating organisation once the equipment is in service.

Key features

180 kg safe working load, approximately 28 stone, covering a wide range of adults in a compact frame.
Manual, non-powered operation, so there is nothing to charge, no battery to degrade and no actuator to fail, which keeps the equipment available and cheap to maintain.
Quick-split design separating into a 5.5 kg frame and a 10.5 kg base for transport, storage and stair carrying.
16 kg total weight, light enough for one carer to move between rooms without a second pair of hands.
Knee pad adjustable from 345 to 515 mm, so the contact point is set to the individual rather than to the average.
Ergonomic handles with marked interaction points, showing both carer and user where to hold, which matters when the same equipment is used by rotating staff and by family.
550 mm width with a 760 mm turning radius, sized for confined bathrooms, bedside spaces and ward bays.
Low 45 mm footplate and 25 mm ground clearance, keeping the step onto the plate small for someone with limited hip and knee movement.
Supports active participation in the transfer, which maintains the person's own standing ability rather than replacing it.
Condition and history. A pre-owned unit, cleaned and inspected. Cosmetic marking consistent with previous use should be expected. Ongoing maintenance should follow the operating organisation's planned maintenance schedule and the duties under LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998. The photographs form part of the description and show the actual condition of the item offered.

Routine care guidance

Component Action Interval
Knee pad Set to the individual, check the adjustment locks securely Before each transfer
Brakes and castors Confirm the brakes hold, clear hair and debris from the castor spindles Before each use
Quick-split joint Confirm the frame is fully engaged and secured to the base after reassembly After every split
Handles and footplate Inspect for damage, wear and loose fixings Weekly
Frame and base Inspect for cracks, corrosion, distortion and missing fasteners Monthly
Cleaning Wipe down per local policy, drying fully Between users
Thorough examination Formal examination by a competent person under LOLER 1998 At least every six months

The above is general guidance. The manufacturer instructions for use and the operating organisation's moving and handling policy take precedence. Any unit showing damage should be taken out of service until it has been inspected.
