The Spectra S2 Plus is the mains powered double electric pump from Spectra's hospital strength range, delivering up to 270 mmHg of adjustable vacuum through a true closed system. It pumps one side or both at once, runs a two phase cycle that separates let-down from expression, and shows vacuum level, cycle speed and session time on a backlit display. This unit is new and unused. The outer carton was torn in transit, which is the only reason it is priced below a sealed one.
The closed system is the part worth understanding, because it is what separates Spectra from most pumps at this price. A physical backflow protector sits between the flange and the tubing, with a silicone membrane across it, so milk is held in the collection kit and never travels up the tube or into the motor. Two things follow from that. The tubing stays dry, so it does not grow the mould that forces tube changes on open system pumps. And because milk never enters the motor housing, the motor itself can be passed on or sold on later with the collection kit changed, which is not true of a pump that draws milk vapour through its pump head.
The two phase cycle reflects how milk is actually released. Massage mode runs at five levels to trigger let-down, then a single button press moves to expression, which offers twelve vacuum levels across a cycle range of 38 to 54 cycles per minute. Vacuum and cycle speed are set independently of one another, and that matters more than the headline figure: output is driven by let-down rather than by brute suction, so the highest setting on the dial is rarely the most productive one, and being able to raise the speed while holding the vacuum down is how a comfortable setting is found. The pump remembers the last vacuum, speed and mode used, although the memory clears if the adapter is unplugged at the wall.
For night work the pump runs at around 45 dB, carries a night light and a backlit screen, and shuts itself off after thirty minutes. The one specification to be clear about is power: the S2 Plus runs from its 12 V mains adapter and has no internal rechargeable battery. That makes it the bedside and desk pump of the range, and anyone who needs to express away from a socket needs the battery equipped S1 Plus instead. Supplied new and unused, with the manufacturer's accessory set.
