Apex / Sternum External Hard Defibrillator Paddles

This item
The Defibrillator Paddles Apex / Sternum External Hard Paddles are reusable accessories designed for use with manual defibrillators to deliver high-energy electrical therapy during cardiac arrest or life-threatening arrhythmias. These defibrillator paddles are commonly used in emergency departments, theatres and critical care environments where manual control of shock delivery is required. The apex and sternum configuration supports effective transthoracic current flow across the myocardium.

Defibrillator paddles of this type are positioned directly on the patient’s chest using conductive gel or saline-soaked pads to ensure optimal electrical contact. The sternum paddle is placed to the right of the sternum below the clavicle, while the apex paddle is positioned on the left chest, typically below the nipple line. This placement maximises energy delivery and improves the likelihood of successful defibrillation.
The Defibrillator Paddles Apex / Sternum External Hard Paddles are constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel with durable insulated housings, allowing repeated clinical use. In addition, many designs incorporate integrated shock buttons and charge indicators directly on the paddles, enabling clinicians to deliver therapy without returning to the defibrillator console. This improves response time during resuscitation.
These defibrillator paddles are available from manufacturers such as ZOLL and Medtronic Physio-Control, and are compatible with a range of manual defibrillator models. Compared with disposable adhesive pads, reusable defibrillator paddles offer a cost-effective solution for facilities with frequent resuscitation activity.
Many Defibrillator Paddles Apex / Sternum External Hard Paddles include integrated paediatric electrodes. These are typically activated by sliding or pressing a release mechanism, reducing the effective electrode surface area for use in children. This allows rapid transition between adult and paediatric defibrillation without changing accessories, which is critical in emergency situations.
The requirement for conductive gel is an important operational consideration. Proper gel application reduces transthoracic impedance, minimises the risk of skin burns and ensures effective shock delivery. When used correctly, defibrillator paddles provide precise control over energy delivery during manual defibrillation and cardioversion.
