This Labcold IntelliCold benchtop pharmacy fridge holds vaccines and temperature sensitive medicines inside a controlled 2 to 8 degrees C range, with a factory set point of 5 degrees C. It suits GP surgeries, community pharmacies, clinics and vaccination centres that have to hold cold chain stock and produce a temperature record for it.
The IntelliCold touch screen controller monitors two probes, one of them a 1 m wandering probe that can be placed anywhere in the cabinet, and logs temperatures automatically around the clock for transfer to a computer. The unit is supplied pre-owned and has been checked in the Elarix workshop before dispatch.

Checked before dispatch

These are in-house workshop checks. Damaged or non-working items are not dispatched. A full engineer service and calibration is not included, and this item may require service and calibration. Planned maintenance, periodic electrical safety testing and ongoing maintenance under PUWER 1998 remain with the operating organisation.
Verify performance before any stock is loaded
- Run the cabinet empty in its final position until the temperature is stable, then check the displayed reading against an independent calibrated thermometer before medicines are placed inside.
- Accuracy of the readings used for cold chain records rests with the operating organisation, since no calibration certificate is supplied with this unit.
- Stock is not loaded on a unit that has just been moved or tilted, and the alarms are confirmed working first.
Why a pharmacy fridge rather than a domestic one
A domestic fridge is built to keep food cold on average. It cycles well below 2 degrees C at the back of the cabinet and swings above 8 degrees C after the door is opened, and it gives no record of either. Vaccines lose potency at both ends of that swing, and a frozen vaccine is a discarded vaccine. A pharmacy fridge is built the other way round: fan assisted circulation to hold the whole interior inside a narrow band, a controller that watches the actual air the stock sits in, and a log that proves what happened overnight and at the weekend. When a batch is questioned months later, the log is the evidence.
The two probe arrangement is the part that matters most in daily use. One probe reports the cabinet, and the wandering probe is placed where the stock actually sits, in the busiest shelf or inside a glycol bottle, so the record reflects the medicine rather than the airflow. Minimum and maximum values are held and displayed, which is what a daily temperature check needs, and the alarms cover the three failures that spoil stock unnoticed: the temperature drifting, the door left ajar, and the power going off while the building is empty. Battery back-up keeps the controller and its alarms alive through a power cut, and the remote alarm contacts allow the unit to be tied into a building alarm system for out of hours cover.
Two trade-offs are worth stating. At 36 litres this is a small cabinet, sized for a treatment room or a single clinic session rather than a whole practice stock holding, and a solid door means checking stock requires opening it, which is better for light sensitive medicines but adds a warm air intrusion each time. And because the unit is pre-owned, it arrives without a calibration certificate, so the receiving organisation carries out its own verification against a calibrated reference before the readings are relied on for cold chain records. This is the wrong cabinet for frozen vaccine storage, for blood bank use, which is separately specified, and for laboratory samples that need a different range or a validated mapping report.

Condition and history
Delivery, lifting and wall mounting
- The cabinet weighs 30 kg. Two people are needed to receive it, lift it onto a bench and position it.
- Wall mounting is carried out by a competent person, onto a wall able to carry the loaded weight of the cabinet, using fixings selected for the wall construction. Fixings are not supplied.
- Leave the clearance around the cabinet that the manufacturer instructions require so the condenser can shed heat, and allow the unit to stand upright before it is switched on after transport.
