The A-205 is Prism Medical's aluminium mobile patient hoist, supplied here with its battery and hand control. It runs a 24 V Linak lifting actuator with powered mast and powered base, carries a quick release carry bar that turns through a full circle, and rolls on 100 mm castors. The frame is anodised and powder coated aluminium rather than painted steel.
The lifting range is what decides whether a hoist is worth owning, and this one runs from 390 mm at its lowest to 1770 mm at its highest. The low figure is the one that matters. A person who has fallen is the hardest transfer in residential and community care, and a hoist whose boom will not drop close to the floor simply cannot do it: the sling cannot be reached, and the fallen person waits for an ambulance crew instead. At 390 mm this hoist will work a floor recovery. At 1770 mm it will reach onto a high bed, a changing bench or a plinth.
The base is powered, which is a bigger deal in practice than it sounds. The legs open from 586 mm to 940 mm measured inside, or 690 mm to 1041 mm outside, so the hoist straddles an armchair, a wheelchair base or a commode. On a manual hoist that opening is done with a foot pedal, which means a carer bending to the floor at the same moment they are steadying a patient in a sling. Here it is done from the hand control, standing upright, with both hands still on the transfer. The aluminium frame is the other practical choice: lighter to push along a corridor and unbothered by the damp of a wet room or a bathroom.
A hoist lifts a person, so it falls under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, which call for a thorough examination by a competent person at least every six months, over and above routine servicing. The carry bar takes loop slings on spring loaded clips and can accept weigh scales. The mast can be assembled at three height positions, emergency stop and manual emergency lowering are fitted, charging is on board, and the control box carries diagnostics and usage tracking. Supplied pre-owned with its battery and hand control.
