Oxford Journey Folding Active Stand Aid, 155 kg, Pre-Owned
The Oxford Journey is an active stand aid: it raises a patient who can bear some weight and take part in the movement from sitting to standing, and holds them there for a transfer or for personal care. It is not a passive hoist and does not lift a fully dependent patient in a full body sling.
It folds flat for storage and transport, splits into a base assembly and a mast and boom assembly for carrying, and runs on a removable power pack. This unit is pre-owned. A standing sling is not included, and the inspection requirements below apply before it is used with a patient.
Before this equipment lifts anybody
- Lifting equipment used at work to lift people must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at least every six months under LOLER 1998, and that applies to the stand aid and to every sling used with it. No current report of thorough examination is supplied with this unit.
- Electrical safety testing and a functional check through the full range of movement are carried out on receipt, as for any pre-owned powered lifting device.
- An active stand aid suits a patient who can bear weight through at least one leg, hold the handles and follow instruction. A patient who cannot do those things needs a passive hoist, not this device. Selection is a clinical decision recorded in the patient's moving and handling assessment.
- Use only a standing sling designed for this lift and within its safe working load. Slings for passive hoists are not interchangeable, and the manufacturer's sling guide sets out which sling suits which lift.
- The safe working load of 155 kg covers the patient. Confirm the figure on the unit's own label matches, since it is the limit that governs use.

These are in-house workshop checks. Damaged or non-working items are not dispatched. No engineer service, load test or LOLER thorough examination is included, and this item may require service. Thorough examination, planned maintenance, electrical safety testing and ongoing maintenance under PUWER 1998 remain with the organisation operating the equipment.
Stand aid or hoist, and why the difference decides the purchase
A passive hoist takes the whole weight of a patient in a full body sling and moves them, and it asks nothing of the patient beyond tolerating the sling. An active stand aid does something different: it gives a patient who retains some standing ability the leverage to get up. The patient's feet stay on the tray, their knees rest against the pad, they hold the cow horn handles, and the boom lifts through the sling under their arms and around their back so the movement is assisted rather than replaced. That distinction is the whole basis of selecting between the two, and it is why a stand aid is the wrong device for a fully dependent patient and a passive hoist is an unnecessary loss of independence for someone who can still stand with help.
What makes the Journey unusual within its class is that it folds. Most stand aids are a fixed frame that lives in a corner of the room. This one collapses to 525 mm high, separates into a base at 18.2 kg and a mast and boom at 19.2 kg, and goes in a car boot, which is why it turns up in community teams, in single-handed care and in homes where a permanent frame is not welcome. The adjustable cow horn extends the range of patient heights one unit can serve, which matters where a facility would otherwise hold two sizes.
Two practical points. The total weight of 40.2 kg is manageable when split, but the base assembly alone is still a two person lift into a vehicle for many people, and the folded depth of 1040 mm needs checking against the boot before anyone assumes it travels. And the Smart Monitor records service and diagnostic data, which is useful on a pre-owned unit: an engineer can read the history at first service rather than starting blind.

Condition and history
Pre-owned, previously in service, with cosmetic marks consistent with clinical or community use. Photographs form part of the description and show the actual unit offered.
No LOLER report, service history or load test certificate is supplied. A thorough examination by a competent person is arranged before the lift is used to raise a person, and repeated at least every six months thereafter.
Battery condition is the usual limiting factor on a pre-owned lift. Cells age whether the lift is used or not, so a battery near the end of its life is a normal finding and a fresh power pack is a modest cost against the price of the unit.
Delivery, lifting and access
- Folded, the unit is 525 mm high and 1040 mm deep, and weighs 40.2 kg complete. Check the vehicle or boot dimensions before assuming it travels in a car.
- The base assembly at 18.2 kg and the mast and boom at 19.2 kg are handled separately. Two people are used for loading and unloading.
- Delivery is kerbside or ground floor access unless other arrangements are agreed beforehand.
- Once on level ground the lift rolls on its own castors, and the rear brakes hold it while it is positioned.
