Frequently Asked Questions

We supply a comprehensive range of CPR and resuscitation manikins for all training levels and contexts:

Basic adult CPR manikins are suitable for lay rescuer and first aid courses teaching chest compressions and rescue breaths. These are typically lightweight, cost-effective and available as single units or class packs.

Feedback manikins incorporate sensors that provide real-time feedback on compression depth, rate and hand position, allowing trainees to self-correct technique without requiring constant instructor observation. Feedback is delivered via an app, LED indicator or audible signal depending on model.

Advanced life support manikins are full-body or torso manikins designed for ALS, ACLS and APLS training. They typically include a realistic airway for intubation practice, IV access points and the ability to connect to a monitor-defibrillator for rhythm interpretation and shock delivery simulation.

Paediatric and infant manikins are proportionally accurate models for paediatric BLS and ALS training, essential for courses covering child and infant resuscitation.

Leading brands including Laerdal, Ambu, Nasco and Simulaids are available. Contact our team to discuss the most appropriate manikins for your training programme and budget.

A trainer AED is a non-shocking replica of a specific live AED model that replicates the exact voice prompts, visual displays and operational sequence of the live device, without delivering any electrical energy. It is used exclusively for training purposes and carries no risk of inadvertent shock to the trainee or instructor.

Trainer AEDs are essential for realistic AED training because they allow participants to experience the entire defibrillation workflow — including pad placement, rhythm analysis prompts and the shock delivery sequence — without requiring a live device that could pose a safety risk in a training environment.

Most manufacturer AED ranges have a corresponding trainer unit. Where possible, it is recommended to train with the trainer version of the specific AED model deployed in your facility, so that staff are familiar with the exact device they will use in a real emergency.

Trainer AEDs use non-shocking training pads that are not compatible with live devices and cannot be accidentally substituted.

The Resuscitation Council UK recommends a maximum ratio of one manikin per six participants for basic life support training to ensure adequate hands-on practice time. For courses where achieving skill competency is the primary goal, a ratio of one manikin per two to four participants is preferable.

For large-scale community CPR training events or workplace first aid courses, class packs containing four or more manikins and a carry bag are a cost-effective solution. Some lightweight manikin ranges are specifically designed for high-volume training with easy cleaning and face shield replacement between participants.

For ALS and simulation-based courses, the manikin-to-participant ratio depends on the scenario structure, but a minimum of one full ALS manikin per training team of four to six is typically required for meaningful scenario practice.

Manikin hygiene is critical to prevent cross-infection between trainees. Standard practice varies by manikin model but general guidance includes:

Between participants during a course: wipe the manikin's face and mouth area with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe and allow to dry before the next participant. Disposable face shields should be used and changed between every participant where the manikin design supports it.

After each training session: disassemble the manikin according to the manufacturer's instructions. Wash removable face and airway components with soap and water, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before reassembly. Wipe all external surfaces with an approved disinfectant solution.

Lung bag replacement: lung bags should be replaced at intervals specified by the manufacturer, or more frequently in high-volume training environments. A deteriorated lung bag will not provide realistic resistance and may affect trainee technique.

Always follow the specific cleaning guidance provided by the manikin manufacturer, as some materials may be damaged by certain disinfectants. Contact our team to order replacement consumables for your specific manikin models.

We supply a broad range of clinical skills trainers for healthcare education and procedural training:

Airway management trainers: standalone adult and paediatric airway heads for bag-mask ventilation, oral airway insertion, supraglottic airway placement and endotracheal intubation training.

IV cannulation and venepuncture arms: anatomically realistic arm trainers with simulated veins for IV access practice. Available in standard, difficult access and paediatric versions.

Urinary catheterisation models: male and female catheterisation trainers for aseptic technique and catheter insertion skills development.

Wound care and suturing trainers: synthetic skin pads and wound simulation models for wound assessment, packing, closure and suturing skills.

Injection trainers: intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal injection pads and task trainers for medication administration training.

Contact our team to discuss a complete clinical skills training setup for your department, simulation centre or clinical school.

Keeping simulation equipment ready for repeated use requires a stock of appropriate consumables. Key items include:

Manikin face shields and lung bags: single-use face shields protect trainees during mouth-to-mouth training. Lung bags should be replaced periodically to maintain realistic ventilation resistance.

Manikin wipes: approved alcohol wipes for quick surface disinfection between participants during a course.

Training electrode pads: non-shocking pads for use with trainer AEDs. These are model-specific and not interchangeable with live pads.

IV cannulation arm refill kits: replacement simulated veins and skin covers for IV training arms that have been used extensively.

Simulated blood and IV fluids: coloured training fluids for realistic IV cannulation and blood draw simulation.

We stock consumables for most major manikin and simulation trainer brands. Contact our team with your equipment models and we will confirm availability and lead times.

Yes. Selfimed UK supplies both new and professionally refurbished simulation manikins. Refurbished manikins from manufacturers such as Laerdal and Ambu represent significant cost savings over new units and are suitable for training organisations with limited budgets or high throughput that requires multiple manikins.

Refurbished manikins undergo a thorough inspection, cleaning and functional check. Worn or damaged components including lung bags, skin covers and electronic feedback modules are replaced as part of the refurbishment process. The cosmetic grade and any known limitations of refurbished units are clearly described in the product listing.

All refurbished manikins are supplied with a warranty. Contact our team to enquire about current availability of specific models.

Simulation and training equipment is generally purchased by organisations — training providers, NHS Trusts, medical schools and first aid organisations — rather than by individual patients, and is not typically eligible for the individual VAT Relief that applies to personal medical devices.

However, registered charities purchasing training equipment for charitable educational purposes may qualify for VAT zero-rating in certain circumstances. NHS Trusts and certain other public bodies may also be eligible for VAT relief on training equipment purchases.

Contact our team before placing an institutional order to confirm the correct VAT treatment and receive a quotation with the appropriate VAT status applied.
