ResMed Standard Air Filter for S9 and Air10 Machines, 2 Pack, REF 36851

The air filter sits at the machine's inlet and is the only thing standing between the room and the airway. Everything the machine draws in, dust, pollen, mites, pet dander and general household particulate, passes through it before travelling down the hose and into the lungs at pressure, for seven or eight hours a night. The standard filter is a polyester non-woven fibre element that captures more than 75 per cent of dust particles around 7 microns. It also protects the machine itself: a blower drawing unfiltered air accumulates debris internally, and that is not something a user can undo. This is the two pack, REF 36851, for S9 series and Air10 series machines.

Disposable, not washable

These filters are disposable and must not be washed, rinsed or vacuumed. Washing damages the fibre structure, and a filter that looks clean after washing no longer filters to specification. A wet filter fitted to a machine is worse still, since it restricts airflow and carries moisture into the blower. Fit a fresh filter and dispose of the old one.

Standard against hypoallergenic

Two filter types fit the same machines and they are not the same product.

Standard. Polyester non-woven fibre, capturing more than 75 per cent of dust at around 7 microns. This is the filter supplied with the machine and the right choice for most households.

Hypoallergenic. Acrylic and polypropylene fibres in a polypropylene carrier, capturing more than 98 per cent at around 7 to 8 microns. Worth the difference for anyone with allergies or asthma, in a house with pets, or in an area with high pollen or traffic particulate.

Both fit the same slot, so switching between them needs no adaptation. Anyone whose symptoms worsen seasonally can run standard filters most of the year and hypoallergenic through pollen season.

When to change the filter

The manufacturer guidance is to fit a fresh filter at least every six months, and sooner whenever it is damaged or visibly dirty. In practice the interval depends far more on the room than on the calendar. A machine in a carpeted bedroom with a pet, or in a house near a busy road, loads a filter faster than one in a clean, hard-floored room.

The filter itself gives the answer. Take it out, hold it to the light and compare it against a fresh one. Grey, discoloured or visibly loaded means it has done its job and needs renewing, whatever the date says. A two pack covers a full year at the standard interval, or gives one spare on the shelf for the moment the fitted one is found blocked.

Key features

More than 75 per cent efficiency at around 7 microns, capturing household dust, pollen and airborne particulate before it reaches the hose.

Fits S9 series and Air10 series machines, including AirSense 10 and AirCurve 10.
Two per pack, covering a full year at the standard interval or leaving one spare on the shelf.
Fits in seconds, with no tools and nothing to adjust on the machine.

Check the machine before ordering

This filter fits S9 series and Air10 series machines. It does not fit AirSense 11 or AirMini machines, which use their own filters. The machine model is printed on the underside of the device. Where the model is not certain, ask before ordering.

Safe use

  • Never run the machine without a filter fitted. Unfiltered air reaches both the blower and the airway.
  • Fit the filter with the printed side facing as shown in the machine instructions, and refit the filter cover before use.
  • Do not wash, rinse, vacuum or reuse a disposable filter.
  • Keep the air inlet clear. A filter cannot work if the inlet is against a wall, under bedding or blocked by a curtain.
  • Filters are single patient items and should not be transferred between users.

Care and renewal

Action Detail Interval
Inspect Remove the filter, hold it to the light and compare against a fresh one Monthly
Renew Fit a fresh filter, and sooner than the interval if it is discoloured, loaded or damaged At least every six months
Check the inlet Confirm the air inlet and filter cover are clear and unobstructed Weekly
Wipe the housing Wipe the filter recess with a dry cloth when changing the filter, machine disconnected from the mains At each change
Higher load environments Change more often where there are pets, carpet, smoke, building dust or heavy traffic outside As required

The above is general guidance for a single user. The instructions supplied with the machine take precedence.
