Where Fig 76 is used

Fig 76 is the upper root pattern, used on retained roots and root fragments in the maxilla on either side. It follows elevation rather than replacing it: a root is usually mobilised with an elevator or luxator first, and the forceps then takes the grip and delivers it.

The beak geometry is the point of the instrument. Long, narrow, cross serrated faces let the operator reach a fragment that a general upper pattern cannot seat on, and the serrations grip enamel-free dentine and cementum which are smoother and less forgiving than a crown. The same design applies apical pressure that expands the socket as the beaks are seated, which is what loosens a root rather than shearing it.

The pattern is commonly listed in instrument catalogues as the Read design, and it is produced in narrower variants for smaller roots and fragments. This listing is the standard Fig 76.
