ResMed AirCurve 11 VAuto Bi-Level Machine with HumidAir Humidifier

The ResMed AirCurve 11 VAuto is a bi-level positive airway pressure device. It delivers a higher pressure on inspiration and a lower pressure on expiration, so the wearer breathes out against less pressure than the level holding the airway open, and the VAuto algorithm moves both pressures through the night inside the range set by the prescribing clinician rather than holding a single fixed value.

Fixed pressure CPAP holds one pressure across the whole breathing cycle, which means exhaling against the same pressure that splints the airway. Where the prescribed pressure is high, or where breathing out already takes effort, that resistance is a common reason therapy is abandoned in the first weeks. Separating the two levels changes both the comfort of each breath and the volume moved, and the gap between them, the pressure support, is what a clinician sets to suit the wearer.

The device is supplied with the HumidAir humidifier fitted, a colour touchscreen, SlimLine air tubing, a standard filter, water chamber, mains power supply, SD card and a carry case.

Manufacturer ResMed
Model AirCurve 11 VAuto
Device type Bi-level positive airway pressure, auto-adjusting
Humidifier HumidAir, fitted to the device

Features

  • Separate inspiratory and expiratory pressures, so exhalation happens against a lower level than the one splinting the airway, which is what makes higher prescribed pressures tolerable overnight.
  • VAuto auto-adjusting algorithm, moving the expiratory pressure with measured airway resistance and carrying the pressure support across it, so therapy follows the night rather than one setting covering all of it.
  • Integrated HumidAir humidifier, heating and moistening the delivered air at the device rather than through an add-on unit, which keeps the bedside footprint to one box and one lead.
  • Climate Control support, holding a set temperature and humidity at the mask when heated tubing is fitted, which is what prevents condensation forming in a cold room. Heated tubing is bought separately.
  • Colour touchscreen, giving direct access to comfort settings and the sleep report without a menu wheel, so a nightly check takes seconds.
  • Adjustable ramp, starting therapy at a lower pressure and building to the prescribed levels, which helps the wearer fall asleep before full pressure is reached.
  • SD card supplied, recording therapy data on the device itself so a clinical service can review it anywhere, independent of app or network coverage.
  • Carry case supplied, holding the device, tubing and power supply together, so the unit moves between rooms or trips without repacking loose parts.

Important notice

myAir connectivity operates in the USA and Canada only. Wireless transmission of therapy data to the myAir app is not available on this unit in the United Kingdom or elsewhere outside those two countries. Therapy data is instead recorded to the SD card supplied with the device, and the card is read by the clinical service or the supplier when a download is needed. Anyone whose sleep service requires remote data upload should confirm that arrangement before purchase, since it cannot be enabled on this device by a settings change, a subscription or a software update.

Therapy pressures are set by the prescribing clinical service. Bi-level pressures follow a sleep study or clinical assessment and are entered by the responsible clinical service. Settings are never carried over from another wearer or from a previous device. The device supports spontaneous breathing and is not a life-support ventilator, so it is not suitable for anyone who depends on ventilation to sustain breathing. Where the prescription is straightforward fixed or auto-adjusting CPAP, a bi-level adds cost and set-up complexity for no clinical gain.

Tubing, humidification and power. The tubing supplied is unheated, so in a cold bedroom with humidification set high, condensation can collect along the tube. Heated tubing with Climate Control addresses this and is bought separately. The device runs from mains power with no internal battery, so it travels in its case but does not run unplugged. Fit a fresh filter, and use distilled water in the humidifier chamber, before first use by a new wearer.
