Dentra Fig 73 is a Hawk's Bill extraction forceps for lower molars. The Hawk's Bill name describes the angled beaks that curve down onto the tooth from above, which is what a mandibular molar requires: the operator works from over the arch rather than in line with it, and the beaks have to reach around a wide, often two-rooted tooth without slipping to the crown. Fig 73 carries one of the widest beak profiles in the extraction range, cross serrated on both faces, so grip is spread across the tooth surface instead of concentrated on one point. That distribution is what gives controlled force during socket expansion rather than a sudden crown fracture.

Where Fig 73 is used
Fig 73 is the general lower molar forceps, used on either side of the mandible. It is the instrument most practices reach for on a routine mandibular first or second molar where the crown is intact enough to grip and the roots do not require a furcation approach.
Two design points do the work. The Hawk's Bill angle brings the beaks onto the tooth from above at the angle a mandibular molar is actually approached, so the operator's wrist stays neutral and the force applied runs down the long axis of the tooth rather than across it. The wide cross serrated beaks then hold that position. Where a narrower beak concentrates load on a small area of enamel and invites a crown fracture, a wide beak spreads it, which is why this pattern is favoured for molars with substantial restorations.
Where the tooth is more compromised, or where the operator wants purchase in the furcation rather than on the crown, a cow horn pattern is the alternative approach. Both have a place, and most practices carry both.
