Where Fig 1 is used

Fig 1 covers upper central incisors, canines and the roots of those teeth, on either side of the midline. Catalogue application charts list it as upper centrals, canines and roots, which makes it the broadest single indication in the upper anterior range and the reason it is the forceps a practice replaces first when one wears out.

The straight geometry is what defines it. An upper anterior sits at the front of the arch and is approached head on, so there is no need for the bends and angles that a posterior tooth demands, and a straight instrument gives the operator the clearest possible view of the beaks as they are seated. Upper centrals and canines also have a single, broadly conical root, which permits a rotational component to the extraction movement in a way that a multi-rooted molar does not. That rotation only works if the grip holds, which is what the cross serrations are for.

Because the pattern also takes the roots of the same teeth, it covers a retained anterior root that is still substantial. A fragment sitting at or below the gingival margin is a job for a dedicated root pattern instead.
