Pre-Owned BiPAP Machine Philips Respironics A40 Pro with 1096770 Battery Module and Heated Humidifier

This pre-owned BiPAP machine is a Philips Respironics BiPAP A40 Pro bi-level non-invasive ventilator built for patients with chronic and complex respiratory insufficiency. It is indicated for adult and paediatric patients above 10 kg and is used in hospitals, sleep laboratories and home ventilation programmes. This unit is supplied with the 1096770 detachable battery module and lithium-ion battery, together with the heated humidifier and water chamber.

Philips Respironics BiPAP A40 Pro bi-level ventilator with detachable battery module

The A40 Pro adapts therapy to changing patient conditions and delivers the lowest effective pressure while maintaining ventilation quality. AVAPS holds a target tidal volume by adjusting pressure support, AVAPS-AE additionally monitors upper airway resistance and adjusts EPAP to keep the airway patent, and Automated Airway Management supports patients with overlapping breathing syndromes. Auto-Trak synchronisation with leak compensation keeps the device responsive to weak respiratory drive, which matters for neuromuscular and hypoventilation cases.

Visual Leak gives a real-time indication of total circuit leak, which helps the clinical team resolve mask fit problems quickly. The device connects to Philips Care Orchestrator for remote therapy review and patient management. Operation is quiet at around 30 dBA and the housing is compact enough for long-term domiciliary use while retaining the performance expected in a hospital NIV service.

Mandatory before any clinical use

  • This device must be commissioned and function tested by a qualified ventilator engineer before it is used on a patient.
  • Ventilation modes, pressures, backup rate, tidal volume targets and alarm limits must be set only by or under the direction of the responsible clinician.
  • A fresh patient circuit and fresh air inlet filters are mandatory. A fresh water chamber is strongly advised for a new patient.
  • This unit is not sold for life-support ventilation. It is a non-life-support bi-level device and must not be used where uninterrupted ventilation is required to sustain life.

Key features

AVAPS volume assurance holds a target tidal volume by automatically varying pressure support, which supports carbon dioxide clearance in hypoventilation.
AVAPS-AE mode monitors upper airway resistance and adjusts EPAP to maintain a patent airway, with an automatic backup rate option that follows the spontaneous respiratory rate.
Automated Airway Management addresses overlapping breathing syndromes in bi-level patients without repeated manual retitration.
Auto-Trak synchronisation with leak compensation, including a sensitive Auto-Trak setting and a flow trigger option for weak respiratory effort.
Pressure to 40 cm H2O across a 4 to 40 cm H2O range, covering high pressure support requirements in neuromuscular and chest wall disease.
Visual Leak indication shows total circuit leak in real time so mask fit can be corrected at the bedside.
Paediatric capability down to 10 kg body weight, so the same platform covers transition and adult services.
Detachable battery module supports transfers, mobilisation and mains interruption, using the 1096770 module supplied with this unit.
Integrated humidification with a System One heated humidifier and heated tube compatibility for comfort during long overnight sessions.
Low flow oxygen entrainment of up to 15 L/min at 10 psi where supplementary oxygen is prescribed.
Comprehensive alarm set covering circuit disconnect, apnoea, low tidal volume, low minute ventilation, high respiratory rate and low SpO2.
Care Orchestrator connectivity for remote therapy review, compliance monitoring and proactive caseload management.
Quiet and compact at approximately 30 dBA and around 2 kg, suitable for a bedside table in a domiciliary setting.

Pre-owned battery module

The lithium-ion battery supplied with this unit is pre-owned. The usable capacity of any lithium-ion cell falls with age and cycle count, so the runtime achieved will be lower than that of a fresh cell and cannot be stated for this unit. The battery must be assessed by the commissioning engineer and must not be relied upon as the sole power source for a patient. Where mains independence is clinically required, a fresh battery should be fitted before the device enters service.

Pre-owned electrical equipment

The unit has been cleaned and visually inspected. An engineer electrical safety test is recommended before clinical use, alongside the ventilator function test described above. The photographs form part of the description and show the actual condition of the item offered.

Supplementary oxygen safety

Where oxygen is added to the circuit, keep the device and circuit away from smoking, naked flames and any source of ignition. Do not use oil, grease or petroleum based products on or near the equipment. Use the device in a ventilated room and keep the air intake and filter area unobstructed. Oxygen flow must be set by the responsible clinician and the oxygen source must be turned off when the device is not running.

Humidifier and water chamber

Fill the chamber with distilled water only. Tap water leaves mineral deposits that damage the chamber and reduce humidifier performance. Empty and dry the chamber daily and clean it before first use in a new patient. The chamber is a consumable component and should be renewed at the interval given in the instructions for use.
