Labcold RSBG1030MD Compact Blood Bank Refrigerator, 88 Litres, Glass Door, Pre-owned

The RSBG1030MD is Labcold's compact blood bank refrigerator, 88 litres and holding around thirty 250 ml blood bags, running at 4 degrees Celsius with a seven day chart recorder and a full alarm set. It is a benchtop sized cabinet at 490 mm wide, which is what makes it the unit for a satellite fridge sited where blood is actually needed rather than only in the transfusion laboratory.

The difference between this and a pharmacy refrigerator is the way temperature is measured, and it is not a detail. A pharmacy or domestic cabinet reads the air inside the chamber, and air changes temperature the instant a door opens. A blood bank refrigerator reads a liquid load simulator as well: a sealed container of fluid chosen to match the thermal mass of a blood bag, so the figure on the display tracks what the blood is doing rather than what the air is doing. This cabinet shows both the chamber and the liquid load simulator on its touch panel, which is the measurement that actually matters when the door has just been opened twice in a minute.

NHSBT specify that red cells are stored at 4 degrees Celsius plus or minus 2, in an approved blood refrigerator fitted with a temperature recorder and an alarm. This cabinet is built to that requirement: a seven day chart recorder, an adjustable audible alarm, a core temperature action alarm, remote alarm contacts for connection to a building management or on-call system, and a blood audit interface. Storage of blood for transfusion in the United Kingdom falls under the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005, and the cabinet is certified as a medical device and built to BS 4376 Part 1.

The practical case for a small cabinet of this kind is the thirty minute rule. A unit of red cells that spends more than thirty minutes out of controlled storage cannot simply go back into the issue fridge, and beyond sixty minutes it is a quarantine question. A compact blood bank refrigerator close to theatre, to the emergency department or to a remote issue point keeps that clock short. The glass door with clear inner doors lets stock be counted without opening the chamber, which is itself a thermal event, and the keypad lock controls who gets into it.

Points to note before ordering

  • Glass door model. The RSBG prefix is the glass door cabinet. The solid door version of this range carries the RSBB prefix and is a different model, so paperwork quoting RSBB does not describe this unit.
  • Capacity depends on what is stored. The figure of around thirty bags assumes 250 ml units on the shelves supplied. Larger units, overbagged stock or a basket arrangement will reduce it.
  • Pre-owned condition. Marks to the cabinet consistent with service use. Door seals, hinges, the lock and the recorder are checked and their condition stated in writing, and Elarix Medical photographs the actual unit on request. Decontamination to local policy before use.
