Lec Medical PG207C Countertop Pharmacy Refrigerator, Glass Door, 82 Litres

The PG207C is Lec Medical's countertop pharmacy refrigerator with a glass door, 82 litres gross and 67 litres net, holding 2 to 8 degrees Celsius under a digital controller with the temperature displayed on the front panel. It locks, it alarms, and at 502 mm wide by 660 mm high it sits on a worktop rather than taking floor space.

The number in the model code is not the capacity, which catches people out. PG207C is an 82 litre cabinet. The 207 is a range code, and the same family runs from the 41 litre PG102C up through this one to the 107 litre PG307C, which is the under-counter size. PG denotes the glass door; the solid door twin of this exact cabinet is the PE207C.

A glass door earns its place in a dispensary for one reason: stock is counted without opening the cabinet. Every door opening is a temperature event, and in a busy pharmacy the commonest reason to open a fridge is simply to see what is in it. Being able to read the shelves through the door removes that, and the interior light means it works without opening the door at night. The trade is that glass insulates a little less well and admits light, so where stock sits outside its carton or the cabinet stands in sunlight, the solid door PE207C is the better choice.

Inside there are two wire shelves on two positions, a fan to move the air rather than let it stratify, and automatic defrost. The alarm set covers door open, air temperature and general temperature, and there is an open door sensor and an antimicrobial handle. It runs on R134a, uses 1.58 kWh in 24 hours and stays below 43 dB, which matters on a counter in a consulting room.

Points to note before ordering

  • Right hand hinge, and it cannot be reversed. Lec build this cabinet one way only. Allow for the door open depth of 976 mm against a cabinet depth of 540 mm, which matters under a wall unit or in a narrow dispensary.
  • Stock to around 75 per cent. MHRA guidance is that a pharmacy refrigerator holds temperature across the whole chamber only if air can circulate, so 67 litres net plans out at roughly 50 litres of usable stock.
  • An independent thermometer is still needed. Department of Health Green Book guidance calls for a maximum and minimum thermometer in a vaccine refrigerator, read and recorded. The panel display is not that record, and a thermometer is not supplied with this cabinet.
  • Glass door against solid door. Glass reduces door openings because stock can be seen, but admits light and insulates slightly less. Where light sensitive products are held outside their cartons, the solid door PE207C is the better choice.
