The ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP Machine is an auto-titrating positive airway pressure device designed for nightly use in adults who have been prescribed CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea. This article explains how it works, what its key components do and what a buyer needs to know before ordering.
Unlike a fixed-pressure CPAP device, the AirSense 10 AutoSet adjusts its delivered pressure throughout the night in response to detected breathing patterns. The device monitors airflow breath by breath and increases or decreases pressure within clinician-set limits. This means the machine delivers only the pressure needed at any given moment rather than a single fixed level all night.
The algorithm detects flow limitation, snoring and apnoea events. It responds by raising pressure before an event fully develops where possible, then reduces pressure again once breathing stabilises.
The device includes an AutoRamp function. Pressure starts low at sleep onset and climbs gradually to the therapeutic minimum over a period the prescriber sets. This is intended to make the transition to therapy pressure more comfortable. Once the device detects sleep, ramp behaviour adjusts accordingly.
EPR reduces pressure slightly during exhalation. The prescriber sets the level from 1 to 3 cmH2O of relief. Some patients find exhalation against full CPAP pressure uncomfortable. EPR addresses this without interrupting therapy. The prescriber decides whether EPR is enabled and at what level.

The AirSense 10 AutoSet includes an integrated humidifier housing. The HumidAir water chamber slots directly into the device body. Humidification reduces dryness in the airway that nightly CPAP therapy can otherwise cause. The water chamber is a consumable item and requires regular replacement. It is not single-use per night but does have a finite service life.
Rainout, meaning condensation forming in the tubing and interface, can occur when ambient temperature is low. Heated tubing (ClimateLineAir) reduces rainout risk. Heated tubing is compatible with the AirSense 10 AutoSet but is sold separately. Standard tubing is typically included with the device.
The ClimateLineAir heated tube connects to a port on the AirSense 10 AutoSet and communicates with the humidifier to maintain a consistent temperature along the air path. This helps reduce condensation and improves humidity delivery. The heated tube is not included unless the listing states otherwise. Ask before ordering if this matters to your setup.
The device uses a disposable hypoallergenic air filter at the rear inlet. This is a single-use consumable that requires periodic replacement. A reusable pollen filter is available as an accessory and fits over the disposable filter. Neither is indefinitely reusable. Replacement intervals are stated in the manufacturer instructions, which take precedence over any general guidance in this article.
The AirSense 10 AutoSet is compatible with a wide range of ResMed masks and with many third-party interfaces. The device does not include a mask, cushion or headgear. These are sold separately. Cushion size and interface type are clinical decisions made at the point of prescription or fitting. A poor seal at the interface affects therapy pressure delivery and compliance data.
The AirSense 10 AutoSet uses an external power supply unit. This should be included with the device. Confirm whether the power supply is present before ordering, particularly for pre-owned units. Operation without the correct power supply is not possible.
The device records therapy data to an onboard SD card. The SD card is typically pre-installed. Data can be read by compatible software such as ResMed's AirView platform or by third-party tools such as OSCAR. Compliance reporting is a common clinical requirement. Confirm the SD card is present and functional if compliance data is part of the clinical workflow.
Pressure range, EPR settings, ramp duration and humidity levels are adjusted through a clinician-accessible menu. This menu is distinct from the patient-facing home screen. Settings should be configured by or on the instruction of the prescribing clinician. Changing pressure limits without clinical oversight is not appropriate.
The AirSense 10 AutoSet includes a cellular or wireless modem in some variants, enabling remote data transmission to ResMed's AirView platform. The prescriber or therapy provider can review nightly compliance and event data remotely. The modem variant and connectivity depend on the specific model purchased. Not all units have active remote monitoring enabled. Confirm modem status with the supplier if remote monitoring is a requirement.
The device reports AHI (apnoea-hypopnoea index), leak rate, usage hours and pressure statistics nightly. This data supports clinical review and is commonly required for ongoing prescription compliance. The AirSense 10 AutoSet does not diagnose sleep apnoea. It monitors therapy delivery against breathing patterns detected during use.
The water chamber, tubing and mask components require regular cleaning according to the manufacturer's schedule. The water chamber should be cleaned daily and replaced periodically. Tubing should be inspected for cracks and replaced at intervals stated in the manufacturer instructions. The manufacturer instructions take precedence over any general guidance here.
The AirSense 10 AutoSet has a stated device lifespan. Pre-owned units will have accumulated hours of use. For pre-owned devices, the hours of use, cosmetic condition and any known faults should be stated explicitly in the listing. In-house function testing confirms basic operation but is not a full engineer calibration or service. Planned maintenance and periodic electrical safety testing remain with the operating organisation.
The ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP Machine is a well-established auto-titrating device used widely in home and clinical sleep therapy settings. Before ordering, confirm the following points.
Photographs, where provided, form part of the description and should be reviewed alongside the written listing. If any detail is unclear, ask before ordering.
