Novalung Vision Alpha Ventilator, Pre-owned

The Vision Alpha is a mains powered intensive care ventilator carrying the Novalung name, documented in United Kingdom paediatric intensive care practice from 2009. It is a conventional positive pressure ventilator rather than an extracorporeal device, and it is offered here as a pre-owned unit with its configuration, modes and service history stated in writing by Elarix Medical before dispatch.

The Novalung name needs a word of explanation, because it carries two quite different meanings. Novalung GmbH became widely associated with extracorporeal lung assist, in particular the pumpless membrane device used to remove carbon dioxide without a conventional pump circuit, and Novalung marketed that product line under the phrase membrane ventilator. A buyer searching the Novalung name is often looking for that oxygenator rather than for a bedside ventilator. This unit is the latter: a ventilator that delivers breaths to the patient through an endotracheal tube and a breathing circuit. Novalung GmbH was merged fully into Xenios AG in 2019, and Xenios AG sits within Fresenius Medical Care, so technical support and spares for this model are arranged through independent biomedical engineering rather than through a current ventilator programme.

Specifications are the part this listing deliberately leaves open. No manufacturer data sheet, operating manual or service manual for the Vision Alpha is publicly available, and a ventilator is not a device on which figures should be inferred from a family resemblance to another model. Patient group, the modes fitted, pressure and volume ranges, trigger sensitivity, whether high frequency oscillation is present and the gas supply arrangement all vary by build and by software version. Elarix Medical reads those from the rating plate, the mode keys and the software version on the unit itself and states them in writing, rather than publishing a specification table that a buyer might plan a service around.

What a ventilator of this class needs in order to be put to work is more predictable, and is worth setting out plainly. It requires medical oxygen and medical air at pipeline pressure, a patient breathing circuit of the correct size for the patient group, active humidification, a flow sensor appropriate to the circuit, and a pre-use check against a test lung. Commissioning means verification of delivered volume, pressure and oxygen concentration against a calibrated gas flow analyser, a full alarm test, and an electrical safety test. None of that is included in this sale, and a ventilator is not returned to clinical service on the strength of a power-on test.

Features

  • Conventional positive pressure intensive care ventilator carrying the Novalung name, not an extracorporeal or membrane device.
  • Documented in United Kingdom paediatric intensive care practice, with a teaching handout issued by a London children's hospital in 2009.
  • Configuration read from the rating plate, the mode keys and the software version on the unit itself, then stated in writing.
  • Patient group, modes, pressure and volume ranges and gas supply arrangement confirmed from the unit rather than inferred from another model.
  • Service history and accompanying documentation stated in writing before dispatch, so the buyer knows what is behind the unit.
  • Photographs of the actual unit, its rating plate and its front panel supplied by Elarix Medical on request.
  • Suited to simulation, training, teaching, spares recovery or display where no clinical service record accompanies the unit.

Points to note before ordering

  • Consumables, circuit and gas supply are not part of this sale. A ventilator needs a patient breathing circuit sized to the patient group, active humidification, a flow sensor matched to the circuit, a test lung and medical oxygen and air at pipeline pressure. None of those are included, and the circuit is a single patient consumable ordered as ongoing stock.
  • Pre-owned condition. Marks to the case and trolley consistent with service use. Decontamination to local policy before handling. Elarix Medical photographs the actual unit, its rating plate and its front panel on request, and states the serial number and software version in writing.
