CPAP Mask Parts Collection

Frequently Asked Questions

Most CPAP masks are modular and designed so that individual components can be replaced without purchasing a complete new mask. The main replaceable parts include:

Cushion: the soft silicone or gel component that forms the seal against your face. This is the most frequently replaced part.

Headgear: the fabric straps that hold the mask in position. Headgear stretches over time and needs periodic replacement to maintain a consistent fit.

Frame: the rigid or semi-rigid structure that holds the cushion and connects to the headgear and elbow.

Elbow connector: the angled connector that joins the tubing to the mask body. Elbows can crack or develop leaks and are available as individual replacement parts.

Forehead support: on nasal and full face masks, the forehead pad or support arm can be replaced separately.

Replacing only the worn component is more economical than replacing the entire mask and reduces medical waste.

The easiest way to identify the correct cushion is to check the model name and size printed on your existing cushion. Most manufacturers mould the model name and size code directly into the silicone on the underside or inner edge of the cushion.

Alternatively, check the original packaging for your mask, which will list the exact model and size. If you no longer have the packaging, the mask frame usually has a model identifier printed or moulded onto it.

Common sizing codes vary by manufacturer. ResMed uses S, M, L and W (wide) for most masks. Philips Respironics uses S, M and L. Fisher & Paykel sizes are typically labelled XS, S, M and L.

If you are unsure, contact our team with the mask model name and we will identify the correct cushion and size for you.

Mask cushions should typically be replaced every 1 to 3 months. Silicone degrades with repeated exposure to skin oils, sweat and cleaning agents, losing its elasticity and ability to form a consistent seal.

Signs that your cushion needs replacing include:

Increased leaking that cannot be resolved by adjusting the headgear.

Skin irritation or pressure marks that were not present when the mask was new.

Visible yellowing, stiffening or cracking of the silicone material.

A persistent odour that does not resolve after thorough cleaning.

Daily cleaning with a soft damp cloth and weekly washing with mild soap will extend cushion life. However, even with good maintenance, silicone naturally degrades and regular replacement is unavoidable.

Headgear should be replaced approximately every 6 months. The elastic fibres in headgear stretch with repeated use and washing, reducing its ability to hold the mask firmly in place.

When headgear has stretched, patients often compensate by tightening the straps excessively. This leads to pressure marks, discomfort and paradoxically can worsen the seal by distorting the cushion.

If you find yourself tightening your headgear more than when the mask was new, or if the mask shifts during sleep despite tight straps, it is time to replace the headgear.

Headgear should be hand-washed in mild soap and warm water and allowed to air dry. Machine washing and tumble drying significantly accelerate elastic degradation and will shorten its useful life.

The elbow connector is the angled plastic piece that attaches the CPAP tubing to the mask body. It allows the tubing to exit the mask at an angle that suits your sleeping position and reduces drag on the mask during movement.

Most elbow connectors incorporate a swivel mechanism that allows the tubing to rotate freely, preventing it from pulling the mask out of position when you turn over in bed.

Elbows may need replacing if the swivel becomes stiff or stops rotating, if cracks develop in the plastic (which can cause pressure leaks), or if the connector no longer clips securely into the mask frame.

Some elbows also incorporate an exhalation vent or anti-asphyxia valve. If your elbow has one of these features, ensure the replacement part retains the same functionality required for your therapy.

Mask parts are generally not interchangeable between different mask models, even from the same manufacturer. Cushions, headgear and frames are designed specifically for each mask model and the dimensions, clip mechanisms and attachment points differ between models.

For example, a ResMed AirFit F20 cushion is not compatible with the AirFit F30 frame, despite both being full face masks from the same brand.

Always confirm the exact mask model name and generation before ordering replacement parts. If you are replacing an older mask part and are unsure whether the current version is compatible, contact our team with your mask model and we will confirm before you order.

Cushions: wipe daily with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove skin oils. Weekly, wash in warm water with a small amount of mild, fragrance-free soap. Rinse thoroughly and air dry away from direct sunlight. Do not use alcohol, baby wipes containing aloe or lanolin, or ozone cleaners.

Headgear: hand-wash weekly in warm water with mild soap. Gently squeeze rather than wring, and lay flat or hang to air dry. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.

Frames and elbows: wash weekly in warm soapy water, rinse and air dry. Inspect clip points and swivel joints for signs of wear during cleaning.

Allow all components to dry completely before reassembling the mask. Using a damp or wet mask increases the risk of skin irritation and microbial growth.

Yes. CPAP mask parts including cushions, headgear, frames and elbow connectors are eligible for VAT Relief under Group 12 of Schedule 8 of the Value Added Tax Act 1994, provided they are purchased by an individual with a qualifying chronic illness or disability for personal use.

To claim VAT Relief at checkout, tick the declaration confirming your eligibility. This reduces the purchase price by 20%. No GP letter or prescription is required, but the declaration must be truthful. Making a false declaration is a criminal offence under UK law.

A 30-day change-of-mind return is available for mask parts that are completely unopened in their original sealed packaging. For hygiene reasons, any cushion, headgear or frame that has been opened or used — even briefly — cannot be returned or exchanged.

We strongly recommend verifying your mask model and size before ordering. If you are unsure, contact our team before purchasing and we will help you identify the correct part.

If a part arrives damaged or incorrect due to an error on our part, please contact us within 48 hours and we will resolve it promptly.
