Doherty 2 Section Electric Bariatric Couch, 120 cm Wide, 320 kg Capacity, New

The Doherty 2 section bariatric couch is an electric treatment couch built for patients a standard couch cannot take. It carries a user weight capacity of 320 kg, which is 50 stone, across a treatment surface 120 cm wide and 196 cm long, with powered height adjustment and a powered backrest worked from a handset on either side.

Width is the part that makes the capacity usable. A conventional examination couch is 63 to 70 cm across and rated somewhere around 200 to 250 kg. Raising the rating alone would not help, because a patient whose shoulders and hips overhang the edges cannot lie safely or be examined properly, and will not relax on a surface they can feel themselves sliding off. At 120 cm this couch is close to twice the width of a standard one. That is the difference between a patient being examined on a couch and being examined in a chair, or not at all.

The powered height range matters most at its lower end. Getting a heavy patient onto a fixed height couch is the highest risk manual handling task most primary care teams meet, and it is a risk taken by both the patient and the staff. Lowering the couch to transfer height, then raising it to the clinician, removes the climb and the stoop in one movement. For a practice, that is the practical form of the duty to make reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010, and it is also where back injuries among staff are avoided.

There is a quieter point worth making too. Being examined on equipment that is visibly built for the patient's size, rather than on something that creaks and is plainly at its limit, changes how a consultation goes. The couch is finished in Doherty upholstery with rounded corners, which wipes down cleanly and has no seams at the corners to split, and it arrives fully assembled on four large castors with a central locking brake. A breathing hole and a paper roll holder are fitted. Supplied new.

Points to note before ordering

  • Height range figures differ between published sources. United Kingdom suppliers quote this couch at both 47 to 93 cm and 49 to 98 cm. The lowest height is the figure a bariatric transfer depends on, so Elarix Medical confirms it against the manufacturer's data sheet and in writing rather than publishing a number that is quoted two ways.
  • Capacity is a rating, not a handling plan. A 320 kg capacity describes what the couch takes. Moving a patient of that weight on and off it is a separate assessment under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, and may call for a hoist, a transfer board or additional staff. The couch removes the climb; it does not remove the need to plan the transfer.
  • Powered equipment carries a maintenance duty. The couch has actuators, a handset and a mains lead, so it falls under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and belongs in the site's electrical testing programme.
  • Delivery and access. The couch arrives fully assembled and is a two person handling item at this size. Doorway widths, corridor turns and lift access are agreed with Elarix Medical at the point of order, because a 120 cm couch does not pass through every door that a 70 cm one does.
