ResMed SlimLine 15 mm CPAP Tubing, 6 ft, Unheated

SlimLine is ResMed's narrow bore air tubing: 15 mm internal diameter against the 19 mm of a standard hose, roughly 40 per cent lighter and taking up about 35 per cent less space. Less weight hanging off the mask means less tube drag, which is the pull that breaks a seal when the wearer turns over.

Six feet long with 22 mm smart-fit cuffs at each end. This is unheated tubing and does not support Climate Control, which needs a ClimateLineAir heated tube instead.

Set the tube type on the device after fitting

  • Devices that offer a tube setting must be set to SlimLine, or to a 15 mm hose diameter, once this tubing is fitted. The device compensates for the resistance of the tube it believes is attached, so leaving it set to a standard 19 mm hose changes the pressure actually delivered at the mask.
  • The setting is changed by the wearer or the clinical service in the device menu, following the device user guide.
  • Fit fresh tubing before first use on a new wearer. Tubing is not carried over between people.

What narrow bore tubing actually changes

The complaint that ends most CPAP therapy is not pressure. It is the mask breaking seal in the night, and the most common cause is tube drag: the weight of a metre and a half of hose pulling sideways on the mask every time the wearer turns over. A standard 19 mm hose is heavier and stiffer, and it transfers that weight straight to the cushion. Dropping to 15 mm removes roughly 40 per cent of the mass and a good deal of the stiffness, so the same movement pulls the mask far less. For side sleepers this is often the single change that makes a mask work.

Narrower bore also means higher flow resistance, which is why the device has a tube setting at all. ResMed devices apply a compensation curve for the hose they are told is attached, so the prescribed pressure arrives at the mask rather than at the machine outlet. Fitting SlimLine and leaving the device on the standard setting is the one mistake that matters here, and it is easily made because everything still appears to work.

Two limits are worth stating. This is an unheated tube, so in a cold bedroom with humidification set high, condensation can form along its length. Rainout is the reason ClimateLineAir exists, and a tubing wrap is the cheaper partial answer. And SlimLine is designed for ResMed devices that accept a 15 mm hose, which covers the S9, AirStart 10, AirSense 10 and 11, and AirCurve 10 and 11. It is not the right tube for the AirMini, and machines built around a 22 mm bore need their own hose.
