Verathon BladderScan BVI 6100 Handheld Bladder Scanner with Charging Cradle, Pre-owned

The BVI 6100 is Verathon's handheld bladder volume instrument, supplied here with its charging cradle. It reads bladder volume from 0 to 999 ml using a 3.5 MHz ultrasound scanhead, shows the result on a liquid crystal display, weighs under 309 g and runs from a rechargeable lithium ion battery charged in the cradle.

The clinical case for a bladder scanner is almost entirely about what it lets a clinician avoid. The question at the bedside is usually whether a patient is in retention or has emptied properly, and without a scanner the way to answer it is to pass a catheter. A scan answers it in under a minute without instrumenting the urethra at all. Every catheter not passed is a catheter associated urinary tract infection not risked, which is why portable bladder ultrasound sits in continence pathways, post operative recovery, stroke units and care homes rather than only in urology.

The accuracy figure is worth stating plainly rather than glossing. Verathon specify plus or minus 15 per cent plus 15 ml, measured against their own tissue equivalent phantom, and they give the worked example themselves: a reading of 160 ml means a true volume somewhere between 121 and 199 ml. That is a decision instrument, not a measurement to chart to the millilitre. It answers whether there are a few hundred millilitres sitting in the bladder, which is the question that changes what happens next, and it answers it under laboratory conditions, with real patients adding their own variables.

Practically, the cradle takes 90 to 264 V so it runs on United Kingdom mains without an adapter, delivers 5 V at 2.4 A, is double insulated to Class II, and cannot overcharge the battery, with a full charge taking at least six hours. The instrument itself is rated IPX1 and is built to IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-2-37. Cleaning is a wipe down and a low level disinfection of the scanhead between patients, with the disinfectant applied to the cloth rather than to the device. Supplied pre-owned with the charging cradle.

Points to note before ordering

  • The accuracy figure is an estimate, not a measurement. Plus or minus 15 per cent plus 15 ml against a tissue equivalent phantom means a 160 ml reading covers roughly 121 to 199 ml, and real patients add further variation. It is used to decide whether to act, not to record a volume to the millilitre, and a clinically surprising result is checked by another means.
  • Ultrasound gel is a consumable and is not supplied. A scan cannot be taken without it, and it is ordered as ongoing stock.
  • Pre-owned condition. Marks consistent with clinical use. The battery is a wear part on any handheld instrument, so Elarix Medical confirms that it charges in the cradle and holds charge, states the condition of the scanhead face and the display in writing, and photographs the actual instrument on request.
